Anguilla anguilla (?)
I would like to believe that this is an eel. (and not a snake)
Eels are historically as important a part of the Dutch diet as they were to the masses of East London, and by 1472 King Edward IV had granted a licence to an Amsterdam fishery to supply Londoners from Billingsgate Market, stipulating that one ship must always be anchored there with plentiful supplies.
I think of them as almost composite creatures; they are able to travel over land, and survive well in both salt and fresh water. Born, according to current information, in the Sargasso Sea, their migratory instinct is so strong that they return back to the Sargasso from the streams and lakes of Europe at the end of their lives to spawn. For this journey their eyes increase in size, and their colour changes to a dark silvery blue.
(...no mention of yellow and red...)
