The thirteenth Century Muiderslot Castle, 15 km South East of Amsterdam was built initially to tax the profitable trade route to Utrecht. Now it stands faithful to its seventeenth century renovations, both inside and out. Flicking through a historical picture book in the museum shop I found this image from the 1940s, the lettering so reminiscent of roller graffiti! I think it was painted with the intention of protecting the castle from bombing during the second World War, but there were no details regarding this in the book.
